We're asked to accept these two bright, forceful people as reasonable versions of their real-life counterparts. The accuracy of their arguments in the "Mary Poppins" production meetings is, in fact, supported by some startling audio tape that plays over the closing credits. Yet the movie does to them as historical figures what Mrs. Travers feared Disney would do to her book and its characters. There's no hint of Walt Disney's reputation as a tyrant???hardly surprising, given the production's provenenance???or of Mrs. Travers as the tortured soul she was. Edges have been softened, harshness has been transformed into happiness sprinkled with eccentricity. And the paradox, of course, is that we're glad to be seduced. As Disney films go, this is a good one.
